Eat That! The Food Group Diet

A century ago diets were something only some rich folks ever thought of. People were more often under than overweight and their meals lacked diversity. Today we all know that nutrition is a different story. Almost half of all Americans today have a serious weight issue, being borderline or heavily obese. The same trend has spread to all countries that have come to enjoy the plethora of tasty, cheap food available to them. Many diets have sprung up from nowhere or followed old ideas of keeping fit, yet not even half of them offer the desired result: a long, fit and healthy life. In this article we’ll look at one of those diets called the Food group diet.

What is the food group diet?

Food has been divided into certain groups by nutritionists to make it easy to tell which food offers you what. This is why there are sweets, which are sugary products that mainly offer only energy, even though some other items from other groups taste sweet too. Fruit and vegetables have high vitamin and low energy content. Fish is light and nutritious, while red meat is laden with energy and minerals.

The food group diet follows the idea that eating foods belonging only to one group helps you digest faster and eat less. There are two main types of food group diets:

  • The weekly food group diet, where you eat items from only one food group each day. For instance you’d eat fruit and vegetables on Monday, fish on Tuesday, meat on Wednesday and so on. You can only eat that type of food and nothing else during the whole day.
  • The daily food group diet, where every meals includes only one type of food group. So for breakfast you eat fruit, for lunch meat and for dinner cereals. You can’t combine food groups at any time and you have to wait a bit between meals. So you can’t just combine your breakfast with lunch and so on.

There are avid fans and stern critics of the diet so we should take a look at both sides.

What do the fans say?

According to the fans of the one food diet, which many celebrities have tried and liked, eating only one food group per meal or day changes the way they feel about food. When you eat only one type of thing you feel fuller faster, because your body wants to urge you to eat something else later on instead. This way you easily cut down on portions, because let’s face it; you get bored of eating five carrots or three apples kind of fast.

Another bonus of the diet is that it is quite simple to learn to follow. You don’t need to read complex plans or buy specific food. You just eat the same thing for a meal or day. You can easily change plans if you have leftover eggs or something and eat only eggs one day, so the diet can be pretty cheap. There are no calculations needed to count calories, since the whole idea is that your body will get fed up on its own from eating the same thing and you will want to stop sooner.

What do the critics say?

Physicians and dieticians say it again and again the way to live healthily is to eat a healthy balanced diet and to work out. It is extremely hard to have a healthy balanced diet with the food group diet because obviously eating just one type of food can’t be called balanced. Your body needs certain nutrients every day not just once a week and your body can’t stock all nutrients for later use. Some nutrients have to be absorbed daily to keep your levels of them high.

The food group diet should just be followed for a brief period of time, if at all, according to the critics. The daily food group diet is considered to be superior to the weekly food group diet, since you can at least work in more variety into one day. You should also choose the food groups very carefully to include vegetable and fruit days often and to keep other nutrients like protein in your plan. Eating only French fries will give you a lot of trouble later on for instance, since you’ll miss pretty much every nutrient except fat and carbs.

Conclusion

The food group diet is quite popular and it seems to work for some. It is best to do it only for a few weeks and to follow the daily food group plan instead of the weekly one. You have to choose your food groups and items carefully to keep you diet as balanced as possible. While followers praise the lack of appetite and quick weight-loss, critics believe this to be a fad diet since you can’t live with it without getting serious health issues over time. Nutrient deficiencies are the main problem the food group diet causes. It is best to ask a physician or licensed dietitian before starting such a radical diet.
