Food Combinations: The Secret to Healthy Eating

Indigestion is one of the most common ailments of the digestive system. According to Ayuverda and Chinese medicine the wrong combination of foods will cause indigestion because the body secretes enzymes that cancel each other out and toxins may be released in the intestine because of bad timing in the way we consume foods.

A few tips on how to eat are these:

  • Eat sweeteners, for instance in tea
  • Eat fruits first because they pass through the digestive system the fastest
  • Leafy Greens and non-starchy vegetables can be combined with everything
  • Lean protein goes well with greens and non-starchy vegetables
  • Starch goes well with greens, non-starchy vegetables and fats
  • Fats and fatty proteins go best with starches, greens, non-starchy vegetables and starch

And a few tips on what not to combine:

  • Don’t eat proteins with more proteins, fats, fruits and sweeteners
  • Starches with other starches, protein, fruit and sweeteners
  • Fats with protein, fruit and sweeteners

There are exceptions to these rules like:

  • Melon needs to be eaten alone because it gets digested extremely fast
  • Acidic fruit go well with fats and proteins (tomatoes, lemon, strawberries, pineapple)
  • Bananas can be eaten with starches because they too are very starchy
  • One-pot meals like stews and soups will not disturb your metabolism as much, even if there are bad combinations in them, because they are much lighter and diluted

Remember that your own body will most likely tell you when you have eaten a bad combination. Keeping your body alkaline or balanced will save you from a lot of stomach aches and other ailments.
