All You Need To Know About Bacon
Man has loved bacon since antiquity. This age-old meaty delicacy is prepared from salting the belly of a pig, though other pig parts can be used. It is debatable whether bacon not prepared from pigs is actually bacon or not.
No matter where bacon comes from, there is good bacon and bad bacon. Good bacon generally refers to unprocessed bacon that’s just pork meat plus natural ingredients including water, salt and perhaps sugar; nothing else. Bad bacon refers to heavily processed bacon products that include nitrites and other additives. To find good bacon just check the ingredients of the bacon products you are buying and always opt for the products that have shorter ingredient lists. Remember that local sources of bacon will ALWAYS be better!
Nitrates and nitrites are common additives that can be found in abundance in processed bacon. These substances are harmless when eaten in small quantities and are found naturally in meats and even vegetables. However, processed bacon includes TONS of nitrates and nitrites, which have been proven to be carcinogenic when eaten in excessive quantities! However, it is virtually impossible to eat enough nitrates and nitrites to be harmful to your health; so eat away!
You can’t actually eat “too much bacon” but you can in fact eat too much sodium and too many additives, if you eat lots of processed bacon along with other heavily salted and / or processed foods.
Bacon is considered paleo-friendly by many and you can cook it in numerous ways; on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave. Every method is viable and results in different, equally tasty bacon creations.
There are tons of bacon-related products including bacon-paper, bacon-cologne and bacon-beer!
